Investing In Alternative Energy ETFs Is Investing In A Cleaner And Greener Future

An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is defined as an investment fund traded on stock exchange. ETFs are very appealing because of its low costs, tax efficiency and stock-like features, very much alike to investments. An ETF integrates the valuation attributes of a mutual fund or unit investment trust, which can be purchased or sold at the end of each trading day according to its net asset value. In addition, ETFs also carry the tradability of a closed-end fund, which can be traded throughout an entire trading day at prices that may be lesser or greater than its net asset value. ETFs have been in the United States since 1993 and in Europe since 1999, customarily known as index funds. Not until recently, in 2008, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission approved the formation of actively managed ETFs.

ETFs are becoming internationally popular investments. One of the most popular investments is on alternative energy, which can include wind power, solar power, hydropower, geothermal energy, biofuels, biomass, algae fuel and biogas. Recent discoveries can add up to the increasing number of available alternative fuels to non renewable sources of energy. An alternative energy ETF is a term in stock trading referring to exchange-traded funds that invest in companies specializing in the production of alternate energy, which can include ethanol, solar power and clean energy, and the researches pertaining to the development of these energy sources. This type of stock trading is known also known as “green investing” since it promotes the use of alternative energy resources that do not contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming.

There are numerous alternative ETFs available, like Clean Technology and Green Technology. Clean Technology and Green Technology aim to produce electricity and fuels with minor or negligible environmental impacts. Investing in these alternative energy ETFs entail higher risks than your usual stocks because companies get easily affected with the changing government policies and market dynamics. But the rewards that an investor can gain from these ETFs can become enormous, like the investor who risked on the First Solar IPO who took home a 500 % gain in just four years. Some of the Green Technology can be invested through Clean Technology ETFs, via iShares S&P Global Clean Energy Index (ICLN), First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge Green (QCLN), PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy (PBW), PowerShares Glbl Clean Enrgy Port (PBD), PowerShares Cleantech Portfolio (PZD) and Market Vectors Glbl Alter. Engy ETF Trst(GEX).

Clean energy and greener technology is expected to become huge investments in the future. However, competing against non renewable that come in cheaper prices is a difficult situation to go through. Alternative energy relies immensely on government subsidies to keep up with dirty sources of energy like coal. But due to the increasing awareness of the threats and hazards that climate change can bring to our world, investors are taking steps ahead in making alternative energy a worthwhile and meaningful investment for the environment and safety of our planet. Alternative energy ETFs are becoming investments that not only investors can benefit from, but from which we can preserve a cleaner and greener environment.
