Investors And Alternative Energy Funds

Raising alternative energy funds and investing on alternative energy are prevalent these days. Perhaps, this is because the natural resources of the world are rapidly decreasing. The fossil-based fuels, which we depend on, are running out; and as you know, they are not renewable sources of energy. According to statistics, the oil available on Earth now is just enough to last for around four decades. In addition, the process of burning these fossil fuels produces very harmful effects on the environment. If we want ourselves as well as the future generations to survive, we must develop a technology that can sustain us. In this case, alternative energy is the solution.

Wind power, solar power, biomass, hydropower, and geothermal are the main concentrations of investors today. Investors know that these are sustainable and solid investments. These areas of renewable energy are said to be great investments since they can last for practically a lifetime. So, it is very unlikely to have a shortage of these energies. The current crisis in the economy and international uncertainty are also factors that encourage people to consider alternative energy sources. They want to cut down expenses and save more money. Moreover, alternative energy funds are backed up and supported by world governments.

However, despite of the great potentials alternative energy has, there are still a lot of speculations. Some people point out that just like any other market sector, there is no guarantee that the plans for alternative energy will succeed. They say that the alternative energy funds might go to waste because such plans may only result in a tech bubble. Anyway, there are other factors that perturb investors. One of these is government regulations. As you know, other sectors are exempted from government interference on condition that they obey the laws; but energy is regarded as a different thing. The government sees it as something that has implications on national security. Hence, it is differently treated.

Volatility is also a huge risk factor. Although alternative energy is already being utilized, we still use oil, natural gas, and coal. This is the present norm, and there are still a lot of people who prefer it over alternative energy. Anyway, whenever these industries demand higher prices on the commodities market, the alternative fuels rise in value. Then again, once their prices return to normal, the usual setup continues. In addition, investors are somehow bothered by regional insecurity. Well, there are certain places which are better than others in terms of fossil fuels. There are also countries, such as Ireland, that do not receive much sunlight. Therefore, they are not ideal for solar energy investments. Geothermal energy, on the other hand, is only suitable in places with significant seismic activities. So, if investors invest on industries that are focused on unstable areas, they are very much unlikely to succeed.

Furthermore, investors are worried that the supply for alternative energy will overflow. Certainly, ordinary citizens will rejoice if this happens. They will not have any problem with energy shortage. However, this will also mean low profits or even bankruptcy for investors. With an overflowing supply of alternative energy and plenty of competitors, they will have no choice but to reduce their prices.
